Abstract: Images of the Duchess of Kent's visit to the hospital at Gobowen, Oswestry School and the Agnes Hunt Memorial Village, during which the Duchess opened the X-ray and Medical Records department at the orthopaedic hospital in Gobowen, which was the culmination of the effort, sponsored by Woodalls Newspapers following the disastrous fire of 1948, showing H G Barrow, secretary of the hospital being presented to the Duchess (GCH11191), the patients brought out on the lawn to see the Duchess (CGC00007, CGC00008,CGC00010-CGC00013, CGC00015, CGC00016, CGC00018-CGC00020), Nurse Joy Edge, 18, presenting a bouquet to the Duchess (CGC00009), the Duchess greeting local dignitaries during a line up (CGC00014), the opening ceremony of the X-ray unit (CGC00021), showing also the Rev G O Jones speaking at the microphone, with the Bishop of Litchfield at his side (CGC00017), the Duchess declaring the X-ray unit open, the Rev G O Jones, vicar of Gobowen and chaplain to the hospital is behind the microphone, and the Bishop of Litchfield, Dr A S Reeve is to the right of Rev Jones, Viscount Bridgman, Lord Lieutenant of Shropshire is at the extreme right of the picture (CGC00022); images of the visit to Oswestry School, where the Duchess met scholars, teachers, parents, governors, and friends at the 550th anniversary commemoration celebrations, showing, the boys and girls of the school seated outside (GCH11192), the Duchess being introduced to the School governors by the chairman (GCH11193), the Duchess in the grounds (GCH11194, GCH11195, GCH11196), the Duchess walking down the drive of the school to the car with Lt. Col Kenyon and the headmaster Mr R Williamson (GCH11197), the Duchess with the mayor (GCH11198), being presented with a bouquet by John Wilson (GCH11201) and handing out awards (GCH11202, GCH11208- GCH11209), the governors (GCH11204), Stanley Jones, an 87 year old man who was the oldest boy of Oswestry School (GCH11199), and the Duchess with her car (GCH11205, GCH11206); together with images of the Duchess at the Agnes Hunt Memorial Village, meeting the residents and standing at the memorial (GCH11207, GCH11210-GCH11215). During the visit the Duchess was dressed in black mourning for her mother, the late Princess Nicholas of Greece.
